Working closely with the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Energy, the Energy Systems Group () designs energy solutions for the military and help bolster the U.S. energy infrastructure's resilience against natural and man-made threats. Our power system and controls engineers use real-time, regional, and interdependent simulations of energy infrastructure to protect power grids against large-scale outages. We design microgrids that can disconnect from the utility grid to serve communities during disasters while minimizing fuel use. Our systems analysts identify improved architectures for energy systems at defense sites, and our cybersecurity experts develop the foundation for secure control systems for industrial processes. Our staff serve as technical advisors to Department of Defense agencies, guiding investments in energy research and addressing the technical gaps in defense energy systems. We work with MIT and other universities to apply their basic energy research to energy challenges faced by the military, such as extending the range of unmanned vehicles. We are actively expanding our portfolio of resilience work to include related infrastructure sectors like water and threats like climate impacts. P rojects are conducted in a team environment, leveraging expertise from within our Homeland Protection mission area () and the broader Laboratory to successfully execute nationally important and cutting-edge efforts.
Our group is seeking highly motivated entry level scientists and engineers who are interested in solving challenging technical problems. Typical activities for our analysts include energy systems modeling, data analysis, algorithm development, hardware prototyping, and supporting demonstration, testing and evaluation activities. We seek a candidate who will be flexible and proactive in developing/ implementing leading-edge techniques for processing and analysis of varied data sets, and working to develop new concepts and designs as program needs dictate. The candidate will work with an experienced and interdisciplinary team to learn about the energy systems group missions and developing and taking ownership of a career path matching their technical interests.
